By Juan C. Ayllon It's been quite some summer. My last two reviews are finished and with that, both the Triangle Hathor turntable and the Usher TD-10 loudspeakers have left the building (you can view the Hathor piece here). Part of me is sad to see them go, but that's the deal. Now, with my Usher Mini Dancer Two DMD speakers and Technics SL1200 M3D turntable back in the lineup, I'm decompressing to my old standby, Michael Franks' Passion Fruit album, served up by my Lampizator DSD Komputer. Kicking off the season, I wasn't too happy. My opportunity to write for an audio magazine fell through after I submitted a piece. "You just don't have the chops," I was told. That hurt.
However, setting aside the rejection, I examined specific criticisms. I think that helped. Now, in addition to maintaining my site (and I say that loosely), I am a contributing writer for Positive Feedback. That feels good. Looking ahead, opportunities abound, including an upcoming review of a new Triangle Art reference level turntable in the next month or so. That should be a lot of fun! There's also a chance that the Man Cave may be relocating. My wife, Belle, and I began looking at other properties with the idea of downsizing. However, we've decided to put that on hold for now. Guess I'll still get to look at that bleached white cow skull on the mantel for a good while longer, which is comforting; with my 40 year high school reunion a month away, I'm more acutely aware of the transitory nature of life. With retirement in the foreseeable future, there's a longing for stability. "We're growing older together," Belle reminded me when I groused about entropy's effects on our aging bodies. "That's what you wanted, isn't it?" Yes, it is. So, with a return to the classroom in my roll as a veteran teacher less than a week away, I am excited. And it's not just about reaching young minds, but about exploring and expanding new opportunities in writing, my career and audio. Cheers.
