If you're like me, you find yourself wanting to upgrade your hi-fi equipment on a fairly regular basis. That's the nature of the audiophile disease, after all. For me, I had purchased the Lampizator Lite 7 Digital to Analog Converter back in 2015 (you can read my review HERE), but the following year at Audio Expo North America (AXPONA), I found myself drooling over it's bigger sibling, the Big 7 DAC. Unlike some fixations, this has been my lingering, secret obsession since then. Fast forward to a month ago, I was talking with Lampizator North America's Fred Ainsley, who drew my attention to their upgrading program; for a fee, owners of their DACs could have them converted to a higher model. In this case, it was the Big 7 Mk 2 DAC, the latest iteration of their Big 7. That caught my attention. The Lite 7 DAC, which has since been discontinued, was a stripped down version of the Big 7 that featured solid state rectification, as opposed to tube rectification; furthermore, it did not have some of the other benefits of its big brother, such as chokes, copper foil and wax capacitors, a new engine that switches automatically between DSD and PCM (as opposed to manually pressing a button) and other outstanding attributes.
Here's a current list of the more salient features of the Big 7:
Now, several conversations later, I await with eager anticipation as the Lampizator Factory in Poland weaves its magic in upgrading my Lite 7. After it has returned and played in my listening room for a while, I will be sharing my observations at Positive Feedback and will provide a link here. Until then, happy listening!
