By Juan C. Ayllon If you want to enjoy a contemporary, well-crafted thriller, look no further than Inheritance. Starring Patrick Warburton (who played Putty on Seinfeld) as Archer Monroe, the patriarch of a wealthy and influential family who passes from an apparent heart attack, his Manhattan District attorney daughter, Lauren (played by Lily Collins), discovers that he has a secret prisoner, "Morgan" (Simon Pegg), chained in an underground lair following the funeral and reading of the will. Things go from dicey to dark -- and worse -- in quick succession. Morgan informs Lauren that her late father was guilty of many sins, including drunk driving-related manslaughter, imprisoning him because the two disagreed on whether to hide the transgression or not, and cheating on her mother (Connie Nielsen) for years with with a crosstown paramour.
Brother William (Chase Crawford) is running for senatorial reelection, but allegations of union payoffs are a threat, and as Morgan gains Lauren's trust, more dirty laundry emerges, and Lauren is faced with a dilemma--whether to release him or not. There are some unexpected twists and turns, including a heart-pounding, flashlight lit search for a dangerous foe that conjures Jody Foster groping in the dark for the killer in Silence of the Lambs. Written by Matthew Kennedy and directed by Vaughn Stein, it runs 111 minutes, but when the screen fades and the credits roll, you are left with a gratifying, visceral afterglow and appreciation for first rate filmmaking. All said, it's an excellent thriller worthy of consideration.
