By Juan C. Ayllon If you’re like me and you use the music player, ROON, for management and playback of your digital music library, you were thrilled with news that an update enables casting a video display of what’s playing onto your TV (or other Chromecasting enabled device), but grew frustrated when you couldn’t make it work. In recent weeks, I enjoyed smartcasting sporting events and movies from my iPhone onto our new Vizio 65” 4K HD TV using the DZN and HBO Now apps, but despite repeated internet searches, couldn’t do the same with ROON, so I reached out to Dipin Sehdev, Vice President of Marketing at ROON Labs, who helped make that happen. In short order, Dipin emailed me this link. Following directions posted there, I tapped on the speaker icon at the lower right side of the ROON display on my Mini iPad2, triggering the Volume Popup, but was dismayed to not find my Vizio TV appearing as a Chromecast device that I could select (see photo below). Settings -- Doh! Then, it dawned on me that I should look into Settings in the ROON app. Presto! I clicked on Settings, then Display, and saw the option, to Enable Family Room Display ("Family Room Display" is the name I gave it when setting up my TV after purchase). Clicking out of it, I reselected the Volume Popup, clicked on Family Room Display and “Display Now.” There’s an option to automatically display Roon on the TV whenever I use it by clicking the “Start on Playback” option, but I did not find that worked with my Vizio; whenever I want to see what’s playing on Roon displayed on the TV, I re-enable it through the Volume Popup as described. Karaoke, Anyone? The article also points out that lyrics may be displayed by selecting a microphone and clock icon on the Volume Popup. I did not see that icon on my display, however, the lyrics to The Eagles’ song, “Love Will Keep Us Alive” (from their album Hell Freezes Over) scrolled on the big screen when I played it. I also saw lyrics appear for Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” on her album, B Day, but it seems that this feature is hit and miss with albums in my collection; some list lyrics, and others don’t. I'm okay with that. After viewing a Facebook photo of ROON's Now Playing status emblazoned across my Vizio above my stereo, someone commented, "Such a good system and it's still getting better!" Clearly, it gives my listening room a more professional and polished appearance with ROON’s video display showcased on a 65" screen. Moreover, I am very pleased with everyone in the room being able to see what's playing instead of peeking over my shoulder or asking me to read the iPhone or Mini iPad screen in my hands to them. Using these steps, I am confident that you should also be able to set up your Chromecast enabled smart TV. With all the work we put into setting up our listening spaces, to me, that’s just a smart cast! To find out more options, click here. Associated Software and Equipment
