By Juan C. Ayllon ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL, February 17, 2017 -- It sat atop an equipment rack on a raised dais at in a grey carpeted lecture hall at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum, a smart board behind it and an American flag off to the right. Its oversized, aluminum chassis sporting three utilitarian knobs and buttressed by dark wooden sides, the rectangular Gudebrod Audio's 3T12V preamplifier looked ordinary, but captivated some 20 attendees this Sunday afternoon. Anchoring its performance were a pair of Audio Research M-100 monoblock amplifiers, an M2 Tech Young DAC, a Pioneer DVD-7400 digital transport, Gudenbrod AC/120/3 AC line filters, and Reality speaker cables slung across ceramic cable lifters feeding into a pair of Sonus Faber Amati Tradition Loudspeakers upfront. Eric Krupp and John Brunner of Gudebrod Audio presented. Classical, new age, jazz and some rock classics played. Initially, its presentation was a little softer in the highs -- an affectation that some prefer. But somewhere after the half hour mark, the team of Krupp and Brunner triggered a phase shift and -- voila! Gone was the softness! New detail and a more forward presentation emerged. Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, more classical and soft rock -- they all presented crisp, well-articulated and compelling. It was a compelling presentation, neutral, engaging and detailed. Kudos for a job well done! To find out more about Gudebrod Audio, click here.
