By Juan C. Ayllon Fifteen years and three houses ago, my wife, Belle, bought her beloved mahogany media center armoire and shelving units. After we married in 2011, it was a media room mainstay in our first and, now, our second home together. Being an audiophile reviewer, friends urged me to get rid of it, as it interfered with the sonic characteristics of the listening room. Moreover, snaking cables behind and into the heavy, oversized entertainment center was tricky and downright frustrating as I swapped review gear around. However, Belle wouldn’t allow it. That is until she attended Audio Expo North America (AXPONA) this past April in Schaumburg. Room after room sported sleek, modern display shelving stacked with gleaming, uber expensive audio equipment sandwiched between state of the art speakers. “You know, I really liked the clean look of the display shelving at AXPONA,” she said, several days later and announced that she’d like to implement that same, spare look in our family room, mounting a larger, flat screen TV on the wall and moving the entertainment armoire upstairs into our living room. Somebody pinch me. We scoured the internet in search of a low slung, sleek, contemporary shelving unit to house. We decided early on that we preferred a more industrial look, but not too rough hewn. It didn’t take too long to find the Skylane 60” TV stand. Frankly, it really stood out. Made of a black metal frame and legs with dark Cognac stained and lacquered solid mango wood shelving -- not the MDF board with wood veneer, it had a stated weight capacity of 200 lbs. and sported dimensions of 24” (H) x 24.75” (W) x 16” (D). It just looked better and seemed sturdier than most of the competition. The box it came in was very heavy and well packed. We were very impressed. Assembly was pretty easy, save one or two screw mountings, which seemed a smidgen off alignment, but worked fine after some effort. We were very impressed with the end result. It looked very smart and was solid at just under 80 lbs. Loading and connecting my audio components was so much easier than in Belle’s media center (which, coincidentally, we had to hire a pair of movers to get upstairs, as it was extremely heavy). Now, swapping in and out equipment for review is a lot more convenient. And the look? My stepdaughter was recently over and was very interested in where we purchased out TV stand. It really makes the room. Needless to say, we are very happy with our purchase! Currently listed at $519.99, you can also purchase it directly at www.simpli-home.com or at Amazon.com .
