One of the better debut albums, Ricki Lee Jones' self titled album caught the world by surprise at just how good it (and she) was. It launched a long, lengthy career that shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, and has launched numerous wonderful albums.
But to me, Jones has never quite equaled this one. Her special mix of jazz/singer songwriter/rock resonated with listeners and brought her a cadre of loyal followers who have supported her as the years passed (this album came out all the way back in 1979). Fueled by songs like “Chuck E.’s In Love,” “Easy Money,” “The Last Chance Texaco,” “Danny’s All-Star Joint,” “Coolsville,” (this song would come to define her style) and “Weasel and The White Boys Cool” this album captured ones attention and never let go. Toss in production values that easily exceeded those normally ascribed to albums like these and you had that perfect mix, great music and wonderful sonics. I can’t recommend this album highly enough. And even better news, Mobile Fidelity is planning on reissuing this album on both vinyl and SACD later in 2018. Good times!
